Context

When submitting a Permanent Resident card (Green Card) through the I-9/E-Verify process, you may notice that an expiration date is not required. This can cause confusion since the physical card does have an expiration date printed on it.

Answer

You do not need to submit an expiration date to E-Verify for Permanent Resident Cards because, under 8 U.S.C. §1324a(b)(1)(B), a “resident alien card, alien registration card” is treated as a document that establishes both identity and employment authorization if it has a photograph, identifying information, and security features and is evidence of authorization of employment—the statute never requires employers to record or transmit a card expiration date. 

Similarly, the E-Verify Memorandum of Understanding only modifies the I-9 process by requiring the employer to photocopy Form I-551 (Permanent Resident Card) and retain that copy with the Form I-9; it does not instruct the employer to enter a card expiration date into E-Verify. 

Because lawful permanent residence itself is the basis for ongoing work authorization—not the validity date printed on the plastic card—the case can be submitted and closed in E-Verify without an expiration date. This is normal system behavior and indicates that the I-9/E-Verify process is working as intended for Permanent Resident Cards.
